Smithy - stock room - work shop - morgue
There were several smithies at the Flåt mine through time. One smithy was placed under ground, on the first level of the mine. The old office building was used as smithy from 1910. This smithy was probably smithy no. 2, from 1883. The building has functioned as smithy, stock room and work shop. Before the new office was built in 1902, the workers killed in mining accidents were placed in this building.
The smith's work
Steel rods were bought in rods by the ton. The smith cut the rods into various lengths and sharpened them for drilling. The longest drills were 2,5 m. 300 drills were sharpened by hand every day until 1913. Then came the machine-drills, with special machines for sharpening, and the smith's work became more general manufacturing, making bolts and fittings, rakes and trays. Horse shoes were also made in the smithy.
