Smithy - upper installation
Steel rods were bought in by the ton. The smith cut the rods into various lengths and sharpened them for drilling. The longest drilling rods were 2.5 m. The drills were quickly worn, and the mine workers had to carry with them a days supply of 20-40 drilling rods. 300 rods were sharpened by hand every day until 1913. Then came the machine-drills, with special machines for sharpening.
